Translating a text takes a combination of technical knowledge, intelligence and passion.

The translator needs to have a firm and comprehensive grasp of a language, seeing beyond the literal meaning of the words in order to read between the lines, picking up on the tone, the implicit information, the subtle connotations of the source text. And, having understood all that, they must then be able to render it – the meaning, the tone, the various allusions – with style and grace in their own language.

The translator’s goal is to transpose a piece of writing from the source language to the target language, striving to maintain the meaning and style of the text as faithfully as possible, but equally knowing how and when to adapt certain elements should it prove necessary. It is no coincidence that the word translation comes from the Latin trans, meaning ‘across’ + latus, meaning ‘borne’, ‘conveyed’ or even ‘reported’. As such, the translator’s crucial role is to facilitate communication between people – to serve as a messenger, a bridge, a link.
